Biophilic approaches, Greenwalls and Plant Lighting

I find it slightly amusing that plants and biophilic design approaches are such a big thing.

Throughout my life, the top of a mountain taking in the view, a serene woodland space as the wind chases through the trees or tuning into the energy of a waterfall as it plunges from above have all been places I have sought to reset and recharge. Staying connected to nature has just been part of being me. It felt right, and it worked. My body would even tell me when I needed to reconnect.

Back to the opening paragraph. I think we’ve all experienced that reconnection with nature and the cathartic effect it has upon us. It never needed to be scientifically explained and was simply a renewal process we all experienced. We found it in different ways, but the outcome was the same. A reset in the simplest terms.

My amusement is that reconnecting or being one with nature has always been a part of us, and so it’s very exciting to see the importance of this being scientifically studied in terms of psychology, air quality, noise pollution and productivity.

These are all areas I know little about, but if it enables us to deliver spaces where we feel connected with nature, are able to create environments which are more healthy, and as consequence are able to improve business productivity, then that is a magnificent achievement.

As part of the Biophilic approach, the simple inclusion of plants however is not enough by itself. Lighting approaches for commercial, residential, hospitality, healthcare and other interior spaces are geared for us, humans. Plants need light, but not as we experience it, and if we want them to thrive, it takes a quantifiable approach.

Thankfully that’s where Intralux’s Grow solutions come into play. Their specialist Grow lighting provides photon specific lighting to support plant growth, flowering, biomass and morphology. With knowledge and the correct approach, we can determine the planting needs and then meet this with an engineered approach using solutions from Intralux’s Grow range.

Supporting clients and projects with great lighting solutions has always been emotionally rewarding, but Biophilic approaches, and the lighting used for this to enable us to connect with nature, deliver healthier outcomes and improve productivity takes it to another level.
